In 2015, Margaret Gonzalez and Steve Perdicaris founded an El-Sistema inspired after-school music education program for underserved children in San Francisco's Mission District. Held at the Mission Cultural Center for Latino Arts, the program includes approximately 60 classes from September through May with instruction in basic musicianship, violin and cello.
In 2020, Music Mission San Francisco officially became a 501(c)3) charitable corporation.
In 2024, MMSF expanded its operation to include flute, clarinet, trumpet, and trombone through a partnership with the Community Music Center.
